Here is a quick overview of important information that will be key to a smooth school year! If you have any additional questions please email me or call me at anytime!
Homework/Note Folder: Each child will be provided a blue folder at the start of the school year. Your child will bring this folder home every night (even if there is nothing in it), so please check it and make sure it is returned to school the next day; placing any completed homework inside also. ALL important notes will be sent home in this folder. If you have notes for me, lunch money, etc., please place in the folder, as backpacks will not be checked for such items.
Homework: Homework is used to reinforce material that has been presented in the classroom, and often offers fun activities. Once we settle into routine, students will have a small amount of homework. Please set a routine for your child to complete this work and return to school in the Homework Folder provided. Due to the “hands on” nature of the majority of the work we do in class, it is often difficult to send “make-up” work should your child miss school, thus the importance of regular attendance. However, following an absence, any possible items will be sent home in the Student Folder.
Specials:
Gym with Mr. Shank: Monday and Wednesday. The children need to wear rubber-soled shoes.
Art with Mrs. Kanine: Tuesday. Additional art projects may also be done in our classroom
throughout the year.
Music with Mrs. Shinn: Thursday and Friday; including one special music program during the year.
Library with Mrs. Hamilton: Thursday. Please be sure books are returned to school before the next
library day to ensure the privilege of checking out a new book.
Absences/Tardy: Please call the school office at 845-3840 if your child will be absent/tardy, or notify me with a note in advance. A dated note is also requested when your child returns to school. If arriving at school after 8:05, please go directly to the office to sign your child in. Please do not walk your child into the room as this interrupts our class which is in session. Let your child enter the room quietly and independently. Thank you for your cooperation! If your child will be tardy, please call the school office by 9 am to order a lunch for that day if necessary.
Lunch: Children may put money on a lunch account for the purchase of hot lunch and milk. Even if your child brings a cold lunch each day, a lunch money account may be set up for the milk purchase. A note will be sent home when the balance is getting low. Hot lunch calendars will be sent home each month and may also be found on the LAS website. Lunch and milk prices may be found in the school handbook. Please discuss with your child whether they will have “hot” or “cold” lunch each day.
Recess: Unless the weather is severe, the children will go outside every day. Studies have shown that academic performance is enhanced by time spent outside, plus…it is fun! Please have them dress accordingly, and remember, it is always better to dress in layers and have extra just in case. A doctor’s note is required if your child cannot participate.
Personal Items/Clothing: Please label ALL personal items such as sweatshirts, coats, hats, boots, book bags, lunch bags, etc. with your child’s name or initials as children often have similar items of other students. It is also requested all children keep a Ziploc bag with their name on it in their backpack with an extra pair of underwear, socks and pants in case of an accident. Additionally, I am always ready to help, but children should be able to dress with minimal assistance.
Snack: Snacks should provide a nutritional boost! An item such as a piece of fruit, cheese stick, granola bar, etc. is encouraged. Please send a morning snack for your child (packaged separately from lunch) and the afternoon snack will be provided by the snack person of the day, which is listed on the monthly calendar. On your child’s scheduled day, please send the snack with them in the morning, or earlier in the month and I will store until needed. 27 items would be appreciated, allowing for a few extra in case of a mishap. Please find the September calendar in your childs blue homework folder.
Birthdays: When it is your child’s birthday he/she will be scheduled for snack that day and we will have a simple celebration at that time. Summer birthdays will be celebrated on the ½ birthday allowing them to fall during the school year. We ask that you please not send cake, as it is very difficult to cut and serve during the school day.
Sharing: Sharing is a very important part of our day in Kindergarten. Please have your child bring in ONE thing for sharing on his/her scheduled day. Talk with your child about the chosen item prior to school so he/she will be prepared to share about it during the designated time. We will have one child share each day and your child’s sharing day is the same as scheduled snack day.
Dismissal: Students will be placed in appropriate lines based on pick-up, bus, and dial-a-ride. If picking up students, you may gather in the lobby by the office to wait for your child. If there are any changes in routine, please notify how and/or with whom your child will be leaving school by sending a note; and please make others who may occasionally pick up your child aware of the dismissal policy.
Bedtime: It is important to remember that children need to be on a regular sleep schedule in order to perform at their best. Bedtime should be consistent. This will help make sure they are fresh and alert for school and can fully enjoy and benefit from all activities.
Toys/Electronics: We ask that toys be left at home. There will be plenty of classroom activities to entertain inquisitive minds! If toys should make their way to school, they will be required to stay in backpacks. Electronics such as i-Touch, Nintendo DS, MP3 players, etc. are not to be brought to school as we cannot guarantee their safety. School issued i-Pads are the only electronics students will need.
